For some gamers, having games that are free of DRM (Digital Rights Management) can be very important, and Good Old Games (GOG) is working on making things easier for consumers in that regard.
GOG has just launched GOG Connect, a new feature that will allow gamers to re-download DRM-free games from their Steam library.

Unfortunately, these games, and future games that are to be added, will not stick around forever. This means that gamers will have to keep a close eye on which games pop up on GOG Connect.
The point of DRM in games is to prevent pirates from stealing them. The problem is that pirates usually find a way around it and it usually ends up hurting legitimate buyers. For example, The Sims 3 had a debacle in which legitimately purchased copies of the game could only be installed up to three times, even when on the same computer. Others claim that anti-piracy measures, like Denuvo DRM, hurt the performance of games like Batman: Arkham Knight, although Denuvo refutes this.
Regardless, the main pain point is that DRM also requires a constant internet connection, which can be difficult for some. GOG was initially launched as a platform to allow legacy video games to be played on modern hardware, minus DRM restrictions. It soon became a champion of anti-DRM, and all games released on the platform are like buying Xbox games from brick-and-mortar retail: once you buy it, you can do with it as you please.
GOG is great for consumers, and should help prevent gamers from having to buy a game twice just so that they can play it on a plane.

Hi so I'm kind of new to gog games, well I've had an account for a while but have never downloaded a game despite having bought a few. I decided to play a game in my library but don't really know how to download them. Unlike steam the games on this website seem to be in several parts. I was trying to download the first withcher game and downloaded the first part (1mb) but when I click on the second part to download it says open with vlc player as the top option, the second option being DownThemAll!, and the third option being save file. I don't know which one to click and would like to know if possible.

Use 'save the file'. VLC incorrectly thinks the .bin files are meant to be used with it, e.g. that they are either audio CD or DVD movie .bin files (images). They are not, in this case they are the data files for the GOG game installer. Not sure about DownThemAll!, it sounds like some kind of download manager, but have you installed it yourself? Safest is to use 'save the file' option, and download all the parts and possible updates (patches) + DLC installers to the same directory. They are big files though, hopefully you have a fast and reliable internet connection.
If you are using the GOG Galaxy client, you can also download the installers (backups) with it.
After you have downloaded all the installer files, patches etc., just run the executables to install the game, patches and DLCs.
Or, if you want more like a Steam like experience, use the GOG Galaxy client to install the game (it will both download and install the game for you). But I personally prefer downloading the installers and installing the game myself, the download will also proceed faster then because the installer files are compressed, while the GOG Galaxy install version is probably downloaded uncompressed.

Install GOG Galaxy. It's pretty similar to Steam regarding the game installation. The Witcher it's a little odd, as you have 7 parts to download before installing. Just download them all. Once you have them in your download folder, you click on first one, that 1mb file, setup_the_witcher_enhanced_edition_2.0.0.12.exe and it will extract the game from other 6 .bin files. You just follow the installer. On GOG Galaxy, you have one big 'Install' button that downloads all you need and run the installer for you.
They did that splitting for Witcher as it can be hard to download almost 9 GB of files in one session. You might need to close the PC or something. GOG Galaxy does not matter about that, as you can close it, restart PC and it will resume the download from where you were last time.

The official ways to download (and install) your GOG games nowadays are:
1) Download the installer files (and updates and DLCs) with your browser, and install the game yourself.
2) Download the installer files (and updates and DLCs) with the GOG Galaxy client (with the 'backup' option), and install the game yourself with those files.
3) Tell GOG Galaxy client to install the game for you, meaning it will both download and install the game in one swoop. This is closest to what you get with Steam, if you are into that.

When you've managed to download them all, the only file you need to be concerned about, however, is the first 1MB part (it will use the others automatically as long as it can find them - ie. as long as they're all in the same place).saarah06
